Join us on Monday, May 20, at 1:00 p.m. for a webinar about Best Practices for Charitable Gift Annuity Programs.

This webinar will share the best practices of fundraising for and administration of charitable gift annuities, with a particular emphasis on nonprofits that have significantly sized gift annuity programs. Specific topics will include:

Key considerations when fundraising for gift annuities such as compliance with state regulations, marketing and promotion, offering rates, documenting key information, preparing illustrations, drafting annuity contracts, providing required disclosures, accepting transfers of assets, and more.

Best practices for the administration and stewardship of gift annuities such as partnering with a third-party administrator, processing payments, filing tax information, investment of funds, compliance with state regulations, dealing with unclaimed payments, considerations for underwater accounts, and more.

Questions will be encouraged.

About the Speakers

Purcell


Phil Purcell
Director of Planned Giving,
The Salvation Army Central Territory

Phil Purcell has enjoyed a thirty-year career in planned giving and currently serves as the Director of Planned Giving for the Central Territory of the Salvation Army. In this role, he is the directional leader of over 30 planned giving officers in 11 states who close approximately $70 million in planned gifts each year. Phil is an attorney and member of the American and Indiana State Bar Associations. He is Senior Consultant and the lead gift planning attorney for the Heaton Smith Group, a national charitable and estate planning consulting firm. Phil also serves as Editor for Planned Giving Today, a monthly national publication. He is lead legal advisor for the Community Foundation Legal Help Desk, a national online subscription service.

Phil teaches courses on law and philanthropy, nonprofit organization law and planned giving as adjunct faculty for the Indiana University Maurer School of Law (Bloomington, IN) and Indiana University Lilly School of Philanthropy and The Fundraising School (Indianapolis, IN). He serves on the faculty of the American Institute for Philanthropic Studies (Long Beach State University) for the Certified Specialist in Planned Giving program. Phil serves as Vice Chair of the American Bar Association’s Real Property Trust and Estate Charitable Giving Group and as a member of the Tax-Exempt Organization Advisory Council for the Internal Revenue Service (Great Lakes states). He currently serves on the board of directors (president-elect) of the American Council on Gift Annuities. Phil formerly served on the board of directors for the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners (past secretary), Charitable Gift Planning Group of Indiana (past president), and Association of Fundraising Professionals - Indiana Chapter (past president). He is a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) and received the AFP-IN Fundraiser of the Year award. Phil received his B.A. degree from Wabash College (magna cum laude) and his J.D. and M.P.A. degrees (with honors) from Indiana University.

Nicole Medeiros

Nicole is the client relationship team lead for BNY Mellon Wealth Management’s Planned Giving group responsible for leading the client relationship team. With 20 years of experience in finance and banking, including over 15 years of planned giving experience, Nicole works directly with not-for-profit institutions to manage the complex needs of the institutions planned giving programs.  She monitors and oversees all aspects of the gift management process, provides strategic solutions to help her clients grow their planned giving program, analyses programmatic risks and delivers insight into industry trends.  Prior to joining the firm, Nicole was at Bank Rhode Island where she was a senior retail sales associate. In this role, she was responsible for maintaining client relationships through supervising client banking activity and other bank employees.

Chris Thill
Director of Donor Services,
The Salvation Army Central Territory

Chris has been the Director of Donor Services with The Salvation Army Central Division since 2012. He oversees the Charitable Gift Annuity Program, Charitable Trust Program, Pooled Income Program, along with assisting with the administration of Endowment and other various Planned Gifts. He enjoys assisting The Salvation Army Staff in facilitating planned gifts that meet the donor's passions in meeting the organization's mission. Chris is a graduate of Northern Illinois University with a degree in Business Management and Economics.  Also, Thill is a member of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners and the Chicago Planned Giving Council.
